Two Day Timber Framing for the Rest of Us workshop. This workshop covers basic “post and beam” construction as it is performed by most contractors and owner-builders: using sound building design and techniques, and inexpensive readily available mechanical fasteners made for the purpose. One of the days is in the classroom, covering structural principles and examples, including basic stress load calculations for shear and bending. The other day is hands-on, laying out and erecting the timber frame structure for a storage building at Mushwood, our lake cottage. We will not be doing crafted wooden joints, such as mortise and tenon. There are several good building schools which teach these skills. Class size is limited to twelve. The order of days is weather-dependent. The textbook is Rob’s Timber Framing for the Rest of Us, one textbook per couple. (A “couple” is defined as two people on the same registration.) Like all of our workshops, sessions are punctuated by Jaki’s excellent coffee and tea breaks!
